Over the past couple of years, I have taken numerous trips to the picturesque Elliot Lake region of Northern Ontario. The City of Elliot Lake is situated between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. This area boasts many lakes which contain a wide variety of fish species, including smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, brook trout, splake, and more. I've enjoyed a range of fishing experiences here including trailering my boat to explore lakes within close proximity to the city, visiting a remote boat-in lodge, and exploring the backcountry via a side-by-side. Each outing has been unique and memorable and, in this blog, I'll highlight some of my favorite adventures in this region so far.
Back in July, I towed my boat to the area with my significant other, Eric, and our Australian Shepherd, Blitz. Our first stop was Quirke Lake, just over 20 kilometers north of the city, where we had a blast reeling in what felt like endless smallmouth bass. The next day, we took on Elliot Lake right in the heart of the city, adding northern pike to the mix and even stumbling upon some lake trout. It was an action-packed weekend! Despite the peaceful, scenic lakes with little boat traffic, being close to our Hampton Inn accommodations, restaurants, and grocery stores was super convenient.

Last fall, I embarked on my first ever side-by-side adventure, exploring the 300+ kilometer Elliot Lake ATV trail network. My friend, Jenn, and I spent a couple of days riding around in a Yamaha Wolverine RMAX2. We ventured deep into the trails, stopping along at various lakes to fish from shore, and soaking in the beautiful autumn views in the process. During our visit, we stayed at Dunlop Lake Lodge, which is located just over 13 kilometers north of the City of Elliot Lake. There’s a restaurant on site here as well as easy trail access right from the lodge. Exploring by side-by-side was such a fun way to travel, a perfect way to soak up the area’s natural beauty, and an awesome way to wet a line!
In spring 2023, I embarked on a backcountry trout fishing adventure at Ten Mile Lake Lodge with my friend, Daniel. The journey began with a boat ride from Dunlop Lake, located just over 15 kilometers north of the city, followed by a short portage to Ten Mile Lake, and another boat ride to the lodge. The cozy, rustic cottages were the perfect base camp for our fishing trip. Shortly after arriving and getting settled in our cabin, we set out fishing in one of the boat rentals right out in front of the lodge. Within a few minutes, we were already catching lake trout (with the lodge still in sight)! Over the next few days, we ventured out to two back lakes where we caught even more lake trout as well as some beautiful brook trout. Catching such gorgeous fish in this scenic location made for a truly memorable experience.
