Founded in 1994, Take Our Kids to Work Day provides an opportunity for businesses to share information, experience and advice with Grade Nine students. The event, which takes place annually on the first Wednesday of November, aims at inspiring high school students to consider their future goals and available career choices.
On Wednesday, November 3, Yamaha Motor Canada welcomed Grade 9 students Jeremy and Aimee to a day of job shadowing their parents at their home offices, along with special virtual sessions hosted by the Human Resources department and Marketing team.
To make sure the participants started off on the right foot, they received a welcome box with a Yamaha hat, snacks to fuel their learning and a note wishing them “the best day!” Jeremy and Aimee went on to find out about the company’s history, its products and what a typical workday might look like for their respective parents. They were also provided job search advice and heard from two current marketing staff about how they successfully transitioned from summer student to full-time roles with Yamaha.
For Aimee, the most notable takeaway was HR’s tips on resume writing and job interviews, while Jeremy found it particularly interesting to learn about how his dad reviews finance applications.
Overall, both Jeremy and Aimee say they would definitely recommend Grade Nine students participate in a future Take Our Kids to Work Day. “It was fun,” Jeremy said, with Aimee adding “it was a good experience.”
